I remember those words coming from my high school weight lifting coach like it was yesterday back in 2004 which was my junior year in high school. What I am referring to is my coach who wanted me to try out for Mr. Cougar. This was an annual bodybuilding show held at the school.
He told me, you already work out…why not follow the diet and compete. I must admit, I was very skeptical at first. I said, ABSOLUTELY NOT! Go out in front of my entire school in a speedo? What is wrong with you I told him!!!
I demanded and answer but after a week of talking with him, I told him I would at least try it out. So I follow the diet and 4 days later….YAWZA! It happened. I was able to see the outline of my abs for the first time EVER!
I Became Obsessed
After following the diet and strength training program for 3 months, I won my weight class and took 2nd place overall.
The next year I came back with a vengeance and my senior year I won the show by a land slide. I used that philosophy/discipline to dominate college and study accounting. I had to discipline myself my junior year by not going out as much to the bars and partying like many of the other people were doing. I applied that same discipline from my bodybuilding show, to graduate with honors from The University of South Florida.
You would think I was on my way to getting a fantastic job in public accounting and had my life figured out…right? Well not exactly.
There Was Still A “BIG” Problem…
I started the interview process for the Big 4 Accounting Firms back in 2008. This was when the economy had TANKED! The DOW was at 6,500 and the accounting firms were only taking a few people due to budget constraints. I made it to the final round of interviews but could did not get any job offers.
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach, kicked in the ribs and was waiting to be fed to the lions. Imagine sacrificing your time and effort for 2-3 years to keep your grades up in order to get a job which under normal circumstances would have been easy to get but the economy being the way it was, did not allow this to work out!
So I continued to get my certification as a Personal Trainer and built my blog.
While I was job searching, I even helped consult and train some professional and collegiate athletes such as Tyrone McKenzie, Marshall McDuffie and several others. But then something very bad happened!
My Worst Nightmare Became a Reality…I Got The Job!
Needing some sort of income, I finally got hired at a lower salary working with an accounting firm. You figured I would be happy…right? I mean that is what I went to school to study.
Well this turned out to be my worst nightmare as I ended up gaining 10 pounds, working anywhere from 50-60 hours a week and not having as much time for the gym. The food around the office was terrible but I did not know how to adjust to this lifestyle. I did circuit training but it was not enough.
After, I got depressed as I knew the definition of the “rat race”. I was stuck and felt hopeless. It was like I was in a 360 degree never ending circle of doom.
A Typical Day at The Office
There was so much pain and agony as every day was filled with stress and deadlines. I would literally get to work at 8:30 A.M. in the morning. There would be little time for even lunch breaks so I had to eat the food at the office which was junk food. I would have to stay at the office until 7:00-8:30 P.M. So after 12 hours of work I was too tired to go to the gym. I was missing workouts and stopped caring about my health as much as I did before. I knew my health was suffering.
This lead to me gaining 10 pounds of fat and having to buy new pants. I realized that I did not have time to workout as much so I needed to change things up a little bit. I ended up losing my abs which lowered my self-esteem. I did not have too much time to workout.

I felt like my life was turned upside down as I was living for the weekends. Then it finally dawned upon me after a horrible day at the office.

To top things off, there was a guy who jumped off an 8 story building at the job. I knew something had to be done. I was around the wrong environment and was not putting myself in a state to decide to leave the job.
I realized I had to come up with something new and take my health back. I used to have the time to workout, and sleep as much as I wanted back when I was a teenager. I kept missing days of workouts and I realized that it DID NOT have to be this way. So I started experimenting with bodyweight circuit trainings to add to my normal weight training routines. So I did circuit training 2 times a week. This worked out well as when I would come home from a 12 hour day, I could do a quick 15-20 minute workout from the comfort of my own home.
I could either do the workouts in the morning or at night as it only took 15-20 minutes a day. It was such a relief to be able to get a workout in that still got the results I was looking for.
